The Power in the Universe

“There is something that waits on our recognition to spring into being, bringing with it all the Power in the Universe.” — “Creative Mind and Success,” by Ernest Holmes, page 31 I have read this quote several times today and it gives me pause about what I’ve done with my life, my beingness. I think I understand what is being imparted, I have a lot of awareness, and intellectually I recognize this amazing Power. And while the thought in the quote exhilarates me, it also makes me feel sad and disappointed. With so many decades behind me in this lifetime, I feel like I am still waiting for a switch to be turned on. But I don’t know what it will take. When it does turn on, I’ll be this passionate person who takes the Power in the Universe, the power in her, and finally makes the most of her innate talents, life experiences, and character and soul attributes. Then I will make a meaningful contribution to the beings of this world, I will finally have accomplished whatever it was I was meant to in this lifetime on Planet Earth. Divine Love

I Keep the Promise

Rev. Kathryn McDowell was the guest speaker at Centers for Spiritual Living-Prescott this morning. She highlighted some of the powerful words the founder of Science of Mind, Ernest Holmes, set down in his volume “The Science of Mind.” I had read a lot of the text more than 15 years ago, but had not studied it much over the years since then. I’m thrilled to say that since moving to Prescott, I’ve gotten involved with studying and practicing the philosophy again and welcomed Rev. Kathryn’s remarks. She pointed out the Introductory chapters in the book that spell out what the philosophy is about: I. The Thing Itself II. The Way It Works III. What It Does IV. How to Use It This Thing is the Power back of creation and can be used to improve our lives in all ways. I knew when I got home I needed to take down my copy of the textbook from the shelf and start reading. I was inspired—and, I really need to make some changes and improve my life to feel happier and more fulfilled. Comparing Myself

In my current work contract, I participate in a weekly meeting of my fellow technical writers hired through the same staffing agency. It’s an informal forum to share knowledge, ask questions, and simply to connect. We are an eclectic mix of demographics and technical writing formal education and experience. There are three job levels, and I am one of the senior technical writers. When I hear my colleagues talk about software, processes, experiences, and the like that I’ve little-to-no clue about, I often compare myself to them, inevitably ending up feeling discouraged. Now, I learned years ago in 12 Step program that the only person I should ever, ever compare myself to is me at different times of my life. In so doing, then I get to see how far I’ve come, and that’s all to whom it matters. This morning I got an ah-ha about comparing myself, my knowledge, and my experience to other technical writers. Sure, I may not have experience using the markup language DITA, or writing API documentation, which is so greatly in demand these days. This Friday evening I thought I’d just select one of my other works of spiritual literature from the living room bookcase—some of which admittingly I’ve never read—and see what the message was for today. One Power

The theme of two of my morning readings overlapped once again. I am tickled when that occurs, for the Universe is providing me with a stronger message to contemplate. “Love… builds and builds. It can’t be stopped. There is nothing Love can’t fix and no problem it can’t solve.” – “Everyday Joy, 365 days of ohmygod life,” by Z Egloff and Melissa Phillippe, April 8 “Through spiritual discernment, we see that we have within us a power greater than anything we shall ever contact; a power that can overcome every obstacle in our experience and set us safe, satisfied and at peace, healed and prosperous in a new light and a new life.” – “The Science of Mind,” by Ernest Holmes, page 146 I can call this power spoken about by a host of names. God. The Divine. Great Mystery. Allah. Source. Elohim. Presence. Jehovah. Spirit. Buddha. Jesus. The One. Pass It On

I got into recovery seeking help with my eating disorder. That help came through in the form of the Twelve Steps, which included finding a Power greater than myself and being involved in the fellowship. Hence, I embarked—more like was thrust (happily)—onto my conscious spiritual journey. At that time, I had barely even heard the word ‘spirituality’ and surely did not see myself as holy nor expected my life to change in all areas except hopefully in the food department. Resentment is Deadly

I have a resentment. That is deadly for me. I don’t get them often anymore; perhaps that’s due to reduced interaction with people since COVID entered our lives two years ago 😊. However, I’d like to think that my consistent spiritual practices have kept me in good stead. I had volunteered to train Sally (name changed) for a task she was assigned to at her job. I don’t know her well, but she seemed enthusiastic and even grateful. We went ahead and set an appointment on a weekend day when I would be off from my own job. When the appointment day arrived, she never showed and never called me. I got concerned that perhaps she was ill, there was an emergency, or the like. I waited a couple days to see if she would contact me, and when she didn’t, I called her office. Someone else answered the phone and said Sally was there, couldn’t talk, and would call me back. When I didn’t hear back within a couple days, I called again; this time I left a voicemail. I never received a call back. Your Thoughts Create

The following quote is attributed to Mahatma Gandhi, although others have expressed a very similar idea: Your beliefs become your thoughts, Your thoughts become your words, Your words become your actions, Your actions become your habits, Your habits become your values, Your values become your destiny. In essence, your thoughts create your life. Imagine all that power you have! This means all aspects of your life are created by your thoughts. Cause produces effect, with Divine Intelligence inspiring and guiding us. My thoughts about my health, love, finances, etc. put into action what is to follow. To be clear, the outcomes probably won’t happen overnight. It takes time, repetition, and energy behind the thought. It’s not magic, like, “Presto! I have a million dollars.” Further, there is more back of this. I have to feel worthy to receive and I may have to prepare myself to receive. If I really cannot fathom having million dollars, I’ll probably not obtain it. If I do, I will not have it for long (you hear stories about folks winning the lottery and in a short time, they are financially where they were previously).
